I love Angry Birds.
‘What’s Angry Birds’? I hear you ask. No I do hear you, I hear the voices. In my head. No I don’t really.
For the uninitiated, Angry Birds is just about the most popular App on the iPhone. You shoot little (and very angry) birds at some Bad Piggies who have stolen their eggs. It’s incredibly addictive.
So when my youngest son’s birthday came round last month I decided an homage to Angry Birds was in order (for he too is an aficionado of Angry Birds).
Combining cake and computer games seemed an obvious choice. Here is a step-by-step guide to creating an Angry Birds Birthday Cake.
(Warning: This is a cake construction, not a bake: I cut many, many corners here)
Ingredients (inspired by paperblog.com)
- 1 pack Betty Crocker Devil Food Cake Mix
- 1 tub Betty Crocker Chocolate Icing
- 3 eggs
- 1 pack white fondant icing
- 2 packs red fondant icing
- 1 pack green fondant icing
- 1 pack black fondant icing
- 1 pack yellow fondant icing
- Round cake platter
- 23cm silicon baking tin
- Silicon baking sheet
- Baking paper
It took ages to find a perfect tin…
First make the cake. I could give a detailed description here but suffice to say; follow the instructions up to the point where it says put the mix into two cake tins; don’t. Put the mix in one tin. (apologies for some of the photos – I lost my SLR £500 camera for a day and had to use the iPhone).
Allow the cake to cool and then slice in two horizontally and fill with the chocolate cream.
Set aside: It’s time to get busy with the icing.
Combine one and a half packs of the red icing. Squeeze it together, it softens up and becomes quite malleable. Then roll it out on the baking sheet. Use some icing sugar to stop the rolling pin sticking to the icing.
Place the cake on a metal baking sheet. Use the rolling pin to lift up the red icing and then lay it on top of the cake.
Form the icing round and over the cake.
Use a knife to trim the icing. Carefully slide the cake onto the serving platter.
Take a piece of baking paper and stick it to your work surface with sellotape. Use a plate the same size as the cake to draw a circle on the baking paper with a pencil.
Now use your skills to draw on the features of the Angry Bird.
Get some cardboard. Slide it under the baking paper. Using a hard pencil draw over the large white ‘beard’ of the Angry Bird. Press hard to imprint the shape on the cardboard. Remove the cardboard and cut out the shape imprinted on it.
Roll out some white icing. Place the ‘beard’ template on top of the icing and cut it out using a knife.
Now cut out two eyes from the remaining white icing.
Position the white icing on the cake, referring to the drawing to get them in the right place.
Repeat the process to create the beak, pupils and eyebrows. Don’t press the icing segments onto the cake too firmly at this stage; you may need to reposition or resize as you go.
When you are happy with your creation get some more red icing and mould a red feathery cap for your bird and place on top of the cake. Cut out three bum feathers and place so.
Make a couple of ‘Bad Piggies’ from the green, black and white icing.
There you have it. An Angry Birds Birthday Cake with Additional Bad Piggies!
